Just this week it has been announced that UCLan has become one of the first universities in the UK to receive national accreditation for the archaeology and anthropology courses. And The University of Central Lancashire is the only university in the North West of England to receive this prestigious award. But what does this mean for students?

Accredited archaeology and anthropology courses

Awarding accredited status to these courses means that students at UCLan can study at both undergraduate and masters level, for degrees and qualifications that will provide officially recognised skills necessary for a career in archaeology and the heritage environment. Awarded by University Archaeology UK (UAUK) and the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA),  UCLan is one of just seven universities across the UK, including University College London, to achieve this accreditation.

What can UCLan offer for archaeology and anthropology students?

Aside from top notch student support and a high quality campus, undergraduate archaeologists at UCLan have the chance to attend excavations on campus and work on prehistoric sites in locations including Anglesey, The Orkneys, Forest of Bowland in Lancashire, and California. Students are also provided with the opportunity to work with heritage organisations and museums as part of the course.

UCLan’s course leader for Archaeology, Dr James Morris, said:

“We are pleased that our commitment to align the course content with professional practice and the unparalleled fieldwork opportunities we offer our students have been recognised. This accreditation will further enhance our students’ employability in the heritage sector.’
