Here at Let Pads, we are one of Preston’s leading providers of student accommodation across the city centre and we know how great Preston is. But now you dont just have to take our word for it, as Preston has recently ranked the number 1 city to live and work in the North West, beating stiff competition from larger cities like Manchester and Liverpool.

In the Good Growth for Cities Index, 42 different cities across the country were measured and ranked against a number of different criteria, judged to be the most important criteria by the public. This included:

  • jobs
  • health
  • housing
  • potential to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic
  • income
  • skills
  • transport
  • income distribution
  • work-life balance
  • the environment
  • business start-ups

For the second year in a row Preston has been named the number 1 city in the North West. Preston scored above average or high points in a number of categories, including jobs, work-life balance, owner occupation and skills, with negative points in health in skills for the 16-24 age group. Preston has been especially recognised for its resilience to the continued Covid-19 pandemic. Interestingly, throughout the year, a lower proportion of employees in the city have been furloughed as part of the UK Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CRJS) in comparison to other cities in the region.

On the whole, Preston ranked 16th out of the 42 cities included in the study.

Speaking on the matter, Cllr Matthew Brown, Leader of Preston City Council, said:

“I am delighted that Preston has maintained its position as the best city to live and work in the North West. This report also shows that our city has pulled together to endure the pandemic and gives me great optimism that we will be in a strong position to recover and grow.

This success links closely to the significant improvement on our local economy we continuously strive for through the Preston Model and our Community Wealth Building Agenda. Underpinning our support for the economic and social well-being of all Prestonians by building a richer and more democratic economy in Preston. I am particularly pleased to see above average improvements in income inequality, jobs, environment, work life balance and housing affordability.

Our city has enjoyed a remarkable story of growth and innovation and I look forward to that continuing once we emerge from this pandemic.”
