Preparing to move out of student accommodation can feel a little overwhelming. Whether you are just heading home for the summer and moving into different accommodation in the new academic year, or you have completed your studies and are ready for the next stage to begin, there can be a lot to consider.
Important considerations when preparing to move out of student accommodation
If you’re moving out of your student accommodation you should:
- Make a checklist: Before you start packing, create a checklist of all the things you need to do before you move out. This can include cleaning your room, returning your keys, cancelling bills and subscriptions, and notifying your landlord or accommodation provider. A checklist can help you stay organized and ensure you don’t forget anything important.
- Give yourself enough time: Moving out of student accommodation can be stressful, especially if you’re trying to juggle exams or assignments at the same time. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to pack, clean, and organise your belongings. It’s always better to start early and avoid last-minute panic.
- Declutter: Moving out is the perfect opportunity to declutter your belongings and get rid of anything you no longer need or use. Be ruthless and donate or sell any clothes, books, or furniture that you no longer want. This will make the packing process much easier and help you start fresh in your new home.
- Pack smart: When packing, think carefully about what you’ll need in your new place and what can be stored or donated. Use sturdy boxes and label them clearly so you can find everything easily when you unpack. Don’t forget to use bubble wrap or newspaper to protect fragile items, and pack heavier items in smaller boxes to make them easier to carry.
- Clean thoroughly: Most student accommodation providers will expect you to leave your room in a clean and tidy condition when you move out. This means cleaning surfaces, vacuuming floors, and wiping down appliances. If you’re unsure what’s expected of you, check your tenancy agreement or speak to your landlord.
- Settle your bills: Make sure you cancel any bills or subscriptions that are linked to your accommodation, such as internet or energy providers. You should also settle any outstanding rent or fees before you leave to avoid any issues or disputes.
