Almost everyone will tell you that the student years are the best years of your life. And most of the time, you’ll probably feel that way too. Studying hard is usually paired with some serious socializing and recreational time. And this tends to be what graduates miss the most after university has ended and adult life has begun. But one thing many past students wouldn’t want to relive is the student diet. And students do have a reputation for being lousy cooks. Here at Let Pads, we are Preston’s leading student accommodation providers, housing a wide range of UCLAN students. And we make sure that all of our properties have stunning, high quality kitchens, to make cooking more enjoyable for our tenants. As a result, we have produced this guide to eating well as a student.

Eating well as a student

Students aren’t renowned for their healthy eating, but it doesn’t mean its not possible with a few simple changes and plans. These could include:

  • Budgeting carefully- the first part of healthy eating is knowing what you can afford, and where to make sacrifices. For example, that bar of chocolate might only be £1, but you can buy a weeks worth of bananas for less. Making healthy changes to your shipping list, while keeping in the budget zone, is a good way to make sure you eat better.
  • Consider where you shop- You should try and shop at supermarkets with lower prices. Aldi, for example, is a great option. This will save you money on your frozen produce, as well as some fresh produce. But you might want to try Preston market for some top quality fruit and veg, at low prices.
  • Plan in advance- If you plan 7 healthy meals, before you go shopping, you’ll know exactly what you need to buy. Try and make sure that these meals use the same ingredients, so that you will reduce waste, and will spend less. For example, chilli and spaghetti bolognaise will both need mince (or a vegetarian alternative) , tomato puree, and the same veg.
